Plumb Moves to the City: Chapter 1

Picture
Plumb had always enjoyed her life in the suburbs, but if one wanted to get enrolled at Rockets University, one needed to move to the city. It was going to be hard working and being a student, but that's what most people do, and if most people could do it. Plumb certainly could. The city wasn't going to be an entirely knew experience for her. After all, she had spent the summer before traveling from city to city with her aunt and the band she manages, but moving to a place by herself was definitely making her nervous.
"Too bad dad isn't home." She said to her mother as they finished packing the car.
"I'll explain everything to him when he gets home, but who knows? Maybe he'll show up at your place one a day and you can explain yourself." Her mother said as she continue to doubt the fact her daughter only had two boxes worth of stuff. When she had moved to college it was at least six.
  "You've got the address right?"
"Yes, I've got it. It's you I'm worried about. How are you going to use a navigator on a bike?"
"I really shouldn't have to, but I'll put in one ear piece to be sure."
"I still wish you would let me ride it up to your place. I'm far less prone to getting lost than you are."
"I'll be fine. Shall we go?"
"Yes, we shall." Her mother always laughed a little when Plumb spoke like her father. That insufferable man who was on 'business' when their precious daughter was flying the coop. She would complain about him to herself the whole ride, and she would complain to him when he finally made it back, but all her griping was a proud woman's attempt to be grumpy lest she'll cry. Her one and only daughter was leaving, and she was going to have to come to terms with it. She would cry when her husband returned. He always had the annoying ability to get his wife's walls to come down. Perhaps, that is why she loved him so much, or perhaps because she loved him she was able to be honest with him.
"It's nicer than my first apartment." Plumb's mother lied as she placed down the large box in the middle of the tiny apartment.
"I love how I can roll out of bed and be in the kitchen immediately." Plumb laughed as she place the other down, "Where was your first apartment?"
"Oh, clear on the other side of the country. I think the town was called..."
The little family talked for hours as they unpacked, and they would talk for hours the next day to until it really was time for her mother to go. Plumb cried a little as she hugged her mother for she knew that her mother was trying her hardest not to cry, and she certainly didn't want to make her mother breakdown. Life would be so different now, but that's the trouble with life it is always changing. Perhaps, that is why we are so drawn to the familiar.
